Anti Party Hopping Laws Two Term As Pm Can Combat Corrupt Political Practices
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Medac) Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the move indicated the prime minister’s sincerity and commitment to improving the country’s political landscape. - NSTP/NIK ABDULLAH NIK OMARKUCHING: The proposals by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, including a two-term limit for the prime minister post, as well as a bill on anti-party hopping laws, is in the right direction that can effectively combat corrupt political practices.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Medac) Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the move indicated the prime minister's sincerity and commitment to improving the country's political landscape.
"For the longest time, these two issues had been identified as the root cause for corruption in the country, yet no political leader has made any attempt to do something about it," he said.
"Two-term tenure or 10 years is already a long time for a person to rule a country. It will be dangerous to allow a person to rule longer than that as it will promote kleptocracy," he said in a statement today.
Wan Junaidi, who is also the Santubong Member of Parliament (MP), also backed Muhyiddin's proposal to implement the lowering of the voting age to 18 (Undi 18) without waiting for the automatic voter registration process.
Apart from that, the formation of bipartisan cooperation to resolve issues concerning Covid-19 and to assist the country's recovery plan is a healthy and mature approach.
"Opposition parties should not be viewed as the enemy. Instead, we should engage them so that they too can contribute. I am also in favour that all members of Parliament should receive the same annual allocation, regardless of where they stand, politically."
He said ensuring special select committees have a more balanced composition of government and opposition MPs could further strengthen the check and balance system, which will lead to parliamentary reforms.
Wan Junaidi said Muhyiddin's seven-point cross-party framework for bipartisan cooperation that will be implemented by the government in the event the vote of confidence is passed would also be a historical and momentous occasion.
"We have seen Barisan Nasional reformation agendas; Pakatan Harapan reformation proposal and now from Perikatan Nasional, which I consider is taking the lead from the rest.
"If there is enough support to the proposal, a true structural reform has come to Malaysia, which has never been attempted before and which, I believe, no political government will ever do again, not in Malaysia for a long time to come," he said.
"For now, we should put all of our differences aside and focus on how to overcome the current Covid-19 situation.
"There is no time for self-serving politicking, hence, I think all Malaysians should support the Prime Minister and PN government in this," he added. - NST
