Amanah Youth Leaders Nudge Party To Form Ties With Mahathir S Pejuang
Four Amanah Youth divisions have nudged the party to initiate ties with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's party Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang)
"This decision is aligned with our monumental efforts to uphold the people’s mandate and to protect the sovereignty of the democracy in our country. Hence it must be done swiftly without being continuously delayed by any individual with a personal political agenda," they said in a statement
The joint statement was inked by divisional youth chiefs Zulhafiz Zulkifli (Lembah Pantai), Mohd Nur Fadhil (Bandar Tun Razak), Sheikh Khuzaifah Sheik Abu Bakar (Bukit Bintang) and Anhdeer Supardy (Batu)
They said Amanah needs to play a greater role in rebuilding the nation, politically and economically
"Therefore, Amanah leaders must hurriedly realign their attention to save all Malaysians from the defectors who are running the country ineffectively at their own will, having known the fact that these people are willing to sacrifice their principles and integrity to side with the kleptocrats for the sake of position and power," they said
Pakatan Harapan has been trying to regain power after it was ousted in late February through defections
With 109 opposition MPs to Perikatan Nasional's 113 MPs, the opposition believes they can muster the numbers if they present a united front
However, the issue of who will become the coalition's next prime minister remains a stumbling block
PKR is insistent that party president Anwar Ibrahim should be the prime minister while Dr Mahathir Mohamad's group wants the nonagenarian as prime minister
DAP and Amanah later proposed Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal as a prime ministerial candidate but failed to end the deadlock
The Harapan government collapsed in late February after Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin pulled his party out of the coalition and joined forces with a group of PKR defectors
Together, they worked with BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and Star to form the new PN government
Mahathir, who was the Bersatu chairperson and prime minister for the Harapan government, had opposed the move as he refused to work with Umno
His relentless attack on the new government led to his and his allies' expulsion from Bersatu
Mahathir has now set up a new splinter party - Pejuang - to take on the new government
On a separate note, the Amanah Youth division leaders expressed support for DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng who was slapped with corruption charges after PN took over
"We fully support his determination in proving his innocence in court. On that account, we would like to urge that Lim's trial and treatment are done in a just manner without any political intimidation," they said. - Mkini
