Amanah Pas Has Abandoned Fadzil Noor S National Unity Legacy
Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil has accused PAS of straying from the moderate Islamic principles championed by his late father, former PAS president Fadzil Noor, in favour of divisive racial politics.
In a statement, Faiz said Fadzil had mooted the idea of “national unity” back in 2001 to counter then-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s push for Malay unity, and it remains to form Amanah’s foundation.
“The wasatiyyah (moderate) approach introduced by the late Fadzil remains a guiding light for Amanah’s struggle.
“Despite the many slanders hurled at Amanah, the legacy of this great figure of the ummah will continue to guide the party’s Islamic struggle, based on the principle of rahmatan lil alamin (mercy to all),” said Faiz.

Amanah secretary-general Faiz FadzilFadzil, who led PAS from 1989 until he died in 2002, played a key role in forging the party’s early alliances with PKR and DAP. His legacy, Faiz said, laid the foundation for Amanah, which emerged as a PAS splinter party in 2015 following internal ideological shifts.
However, Faiz claimed that under the leadership of Fadzil’s successor Abdul Hadi Awang, PAS’ political compass had veered far from his father’s inclusive vision.
“They use narrow interpretations of religion to stoke racial hatred.
“In pursuit of this, PAS now operates on slander and provocation instead of scholarly arguments and facts,” he said.
Pig farms and haj issue
As an example, he pointed to the recently concluded Ayer Kuning by-election, where PAS allegedly played up the issue of pig farms in Malay-majority areas to frame the Chinese community as a threat to Malays.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang“This is despite the fact that there were no waste pollution incidents from pig farms,” he noted, referring to local authorities’ confirmation that environmental standards had not been breached.
Faiz also cited a controversial suggestion to postpone the haj pilgrimage due to the by-election campaign, calling it a “politically motivated fatwa” lacking in sound Islamic jurisprudence.
He added that calls for “Malay unity” often resurface when political parties begin to lose support, as seen during Mahathir’s tenure in Umno during the Reformasi era, and more recently from PAS and Bersatu under Perikatan Nasional.
“The legacy of Fadzil’s national unity struggle is no longer championed by PAS,” said Faiz.
In the Ayer Kuning by-election, PAS candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek was defeated by Umno’s Yusri Bakir, who retained the seat for BN. PSM’s candidate KS Bawani finished last. - Mkini
