Amanah Members Not Stupid Youth Vice Chief Hits Out At Former Leader
Amanah Youth vice-chief Zulhazmi Hassan has spoken out against the movement’s former youth leader who claimed there were rumblings among members who wished for a change of party president ahead of the party's election this month.
Zulhazmi dismissed Hasnul Zulkarnain Abd Munaim’s claim as a mere “fiction”, saying all Amanah members are aware the position of party president is not contested, but rather is chosen by consensus from among a 27-person committee elected by delegates.
"Amanah members are not stupid and they know that the president’s position is not contested, so the talk that there is momentum to change the president is just fabrication," he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Hasnul claimed that Amanah president Mohamad Sabu in his speech at the National Amanah Youth Convention 2023 did not have a clear vision when he called on Amanah Youth to work with and strengthen Umno to gain the support of the people in opposition-governed states.
"This statement is a bit strange, why should Umno be strengthened when they are known to have millions of members and thousands of branches?
“No wonder there is among Amanah members a growing trend to change the president. The vision is not clear," said Hasnul in a Facebook post.
Hasnul was elected as Titi Serong state assemblyperson while in Amanah but quit the party in the aftermath of the Sheraton Move to join Bersatu in 2020.
He was later sacked from Bersatu for his actions in supporting Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad to become state menteri besar.
Amanah president Mohamad SabuMohamad in his speech on Saturday said Amanah Youth needed to regain the people's support for the unity government in the four Perikatan Nasional-led states - namely Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu.
He said that the youth wing needs to work alongside Umno Youth to restore the position of Pakatan Harapan and BN in the four states.
"For us to regain a foothold in Kelantan and Terengganu in particular, we need to work closely so that Umno is strong again.
“I never said that I want Umno to be strong, but this is a fact...that's why hard work must be done for the unity of Harapan, Umno and BN in these states," said Mohamad.
‘Block opposition’s influence’
Meanwhile, Zulhazmi stressed that Mohamad's suggestion to revive Umno is intended to curb the influence of the opposition and to emphasise the spirit of unity to face the 16th general election, especially in Kelantan and Terengganu.
“Helping each other to strengthen their parties, reinforce cooperation and regain support of the people to oppose extreme religious and racial opportunists because of their greed for power.
"Amanah president’s vision is clear, but the former youth leader failed to understand or pretended not to understand and made up stories that there are members who want to change the president," he added.
Zulhazmi also criticised Hasnul, claiming that the former assemblyperson did not need to act nice after his past betrayal of the party.
"Perhaps he has forgotten his sin of betrayal, but not us,” said Zulhaimi.
He also said that Mohamad was offered rewards but chose to stick to his principles unlike those who abandoned the party. - Mkini
