The Umno Youth chief completed giving his statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD) in Kuala Lumpur at 1.25am today, Bernama reported.
According to his lawyer Aizat Aman, the Merlimau assemblyman cooperated with the police and answered all of the approximately 80 questions posed by the investigating officer.
“He is facing an investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he told reporters when met in front of the IPD today.
Akmal later addressed the large group of supporters who had gathered outside the IPD, and also told the media that he would be giving his full cooperation to police in their investigation.
He arrived at the Dang Wangi IPD at 11pm yesterday to have his statement recorded.
Yesterday, police confirmed that they were investigating a viral Facebook video featuring Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh making statements that were considered to be “hate speech” that could disturb public peace.
In a statement, Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said an investigation under the Sedition Act and the Penal Code (for criminal intimidation) was launched after a report was lodged on Aug 12.
“To date, two police reports have been filed by members of the public in Penang, and both reports are currently being investigated,” he said.
He added that the case had been taken over by the special crime investigation unit of Bukit Aman as of yesterday evening. - FMT
