Community activist Kuan Chee Heng has spoken out after he received a complaint from a woman in her 40s who was beaten and stripped after not being able to settle her debts with an illegal loan shark or 'Ah Long'.
According to Kuan (above), who is also Community Policing Malaysia (CPM) president, the victim from Kuala Lumpur had previously worked in a furniture shop and took out a loan of RM16,000 to cover the cost of her father's funeral on May 13.
"She had paid part of her debt including the interest rates but after the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) nationwide, the victim could not work and lost her source of income.
"As a result, she was unable to continue paying the balance of the debt. The victim was abducted and taken to an unknown place before being beaten and stripped naked last week," Kuan told Malaysiakini today.
He said the victim came forward to ask for help after being threatened by her abductors.
He said the victim has refused to lodge a police report because she is worried that her nude photos would be made public and she was now in a state of fear.
“I will try to resolve this case," said Kuan.
The activist, also known as "Uncle Kentang" advised people in trouble not to enter into any agreement with the loan sharks.
“I call on those who need help to contact us or any charitable agency for help,” he urged. - Mkini
