Ong Yong Xun created the JomStudy app to help students prepare for the SPM examinationPETALING JAYA: A secondary-school student’s frustration at having to carry heavy school textbooks back and forth has led him to create an app to help SPM students revise their subjects in preparation for the examination
Ong Yong Xun used his time after the STPM higher school certificate examination in December to learn app development, relying on online tutorials and videos. In three months, he created a free app to help Form Five students prepare for the SPM examination
Ong, 20, said his app, “JomStudy–SPM Revision Notes”, provides short and informative notes on 16 SPM subjects, divided into easily digestible chapters to help students quickly absorb the fundamentals
In addition to the seven compulsory SPM subjects, Malay, English, Mathematics, Science, History, Islamic Studies and Moral Education, there are notes for elective subjects such as Additional Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business, Economics, Accounting, Geography and Chinese
The app explains each subject with simple concepts and provides visual aids such as tables, charts and photographs
The JomStudy app offers notes for 16 subjects of the SPM examination.“I created this app because, when I was an SPM student, I couldn’t find any notes that I could bring around with me without having to carry bulky books,” he said
Ong said he started learning how to write an app in January. After writing the app using the Ionic app development platform, he uploaded the SPM notes, some of which were contributions from friends
“There were definitely a lot of errors when I started out, but I was really determined to get through it and finish it.”He hopes the app will reach 10,000 downloads on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the next six months
Other exam-revision apps are available on the app stores, but they cover a limited range of subjects, and were meant to promote tuition centres, or require some form of payment, he said
Ong, who lives in Petaling Jaya, said he would continue to update the app to keep up with the syllabus, and introduce features such as multiple choice questions
He now has his sights set on studying Actuarial Science, Accounting or Civil Engineering when the new university year starts in August. - FMT
