Abu Kassim Auditor General Tried To Brief Macc On Unreported 1mdb Matter
Former MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed (above) said he was neither aware nor did he take part in the alleged tampering of the national audit report on 1MDB in 2016
However, he said "the auditor-general" had tried to brief the MACC on something that went unreported
"I was not involved at all (in the alleged tampering). We tried to get the original audit report
"But I did speak to the auditor-general and there was an occasion they tried to brief us on something that was not published
"And that is why we went beyond it and started the investigation," Abu Kassim told reporters in Putrajaya todayHe was speaking at a press conference after the ceremony to present the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award
He did not elaborate further on the audit matter, saying the press conference should focus on the Qatar-based awards
The auditor-general he spoke of is likely to be Ambrin Buang
This is as the current auditor-general Madinah Mohamad, who succeeded Ambrin, only took office in February 2017, six months after Abu Kassim retired from the MACC in August 2016
It is not clear what the un-reported matter was or when the attempted briefing occurred
Madinah (above, left) previously said that the 1MDB national audit report was tampered with between February and March 2016.Among those implicated in the alleged tampering are former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak and former 1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy
Also present at today's press conference with Abu Kassim were Ali Fetais Al Marri, the Qatar attorney-general and Rule of Law Anti-Corruption Centre advisory member Eduardo Vetere. -Mkini
