Of the five travellers who tested positive, three were detected at Subang Airport, and one each at KLIA and the Penang International Airport. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Of the 2,546 people that had been tested at the land and sea entrances to Langkawi, five tested positive for Covid-19 as of noon today.
The island is the first destination in Malaysia designated as a green bubble for tourism activities, opening up to visitors from today.
In a statement, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that all five prospective travellers were asymptomatic but had been issued 10-day home surveillance orders.
Three cases were detected at Subang Airport, with the remaining two at KLIA and the Penang International Airport.
The vast majority of tests conducted were RTK-Antigen tests performed at the airports and the Kuala Perlis ferry terminal, with just six travellers opting for an RT-PCR test prior to their departure, all of which were negative.
“The success of the Langkawi pilot project as the first domestic tourism bubble is very important in determining the direction of the opening of the next domestic tourism bubble destination,” Noor Hisham said.
“This pilot project needs to be implemented carefully to ensure that it runs smoothly and does not cause an increase in cases and new clusters. That is why, the government needs to ensure that everyone going to Langkawi is fully vaccinated, is not Covid-19 positive, and not a close contact of a positive case.”
He reminded travellers to abide by existing public health SOPs to ensure their safety as well as that of their fellow travellers, and the wider community.
“If symptoms occur either during the travel period or after returning from Langkawi, they should immediately seek early treatment or do a self-test.
“If people take the flexibility given to them lightly, it is not impossible for the situation to get worse.” - FMT
