200 000 Accounts Affected As Sungai Johor Contamination Halts Water Supply

Around 200,000 consumer accounts are facing unscheduled water supply disruptions following pollution in Sungai Johor since yesterday. - Bernama picJOHOR BARU: Around 200,000 consumer accounts are facing unscheduled water supply disruptions following pollution in Sungai Johor since yesterday.
Ranhill SAJ said that the level of raw water contamination in the river was being closely monitored to ensure all water treatment plants (WTPs) could operate at optimal capacity.
According to the Johor water operator, the Linggiu WTP in Kota Tinggi had resumed full operations, while the Semangar WTP is expected to recover in stages today.
"Monitoring and recovery efforts have been ongoing since the pollution was first detected yesterday. Field teams are also inspecting river intakes and supplying alternative water to affected areas," the company said in a Facebook post.
Ranhill SAJ stressed its commitment to ensuring residents in affected areas continue to receive alternative water supply efficiently and on schedule.
"For any enquiries regarding water tanker assistance, contact our hotline at 1800-88-7474. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and sincerely appreciate your patience," it added.
Earlier, State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said that the turbidity level of raw water in the Johor River Basin had surged to 37,400 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), far above the normal level of around 400 NTU, following the rupture of a sand washing pond at an inland sand mining site in Kota Tinggi.
He said that soil movement caused the collapse of the sixth sand washing pond owned by a local company, which subsequently polluted Sungai Johor.
Operations at several WTPs, including Linggiu, Semangar, Sungai Johor, and PUB (Singapore), have been affected, resulting in temporary and unscheduled water supply disruptions in areas such as Senai, Skudai, Seelong, Felda Linggiu, Petri Jaya, and Lima Kedai. — BERNAMA
