19 Schools Evacuated Over Bomb Hoax
Nineteen schools across Peninsular Malaysia have been evacuated today following a bomb hoax.
According to Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain, the bomb threats were received from two email accounts, which prompted the police and Fire and Rescue Department to evacuate the schools and conduct security flushing of the premises.
“However, no threats have been discovered. In this case, investigations found the email threats are false and there is no evidence of any risk of bombs in any of the schools claimed,” he said in a statement today.
The affected schools include government schools under the Education Ministry, international schools, and private schools.
Seven incidents were reported in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (five), Johor (three), Penang (two), Perak (one), and Negeri Sembilan (one).
“Investigations found both email addresses used to send the threats were newly created and were never used with any internet service. Its contents were originally written in English and translated into Bahasa Malaysia using a translation app.
“The same email contents were also sent to 70 schools in Jamaica on Nov 12, also through the same email provider,” he added.
Razarudin said the case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for abuse of network facilities.
It will also seek to establish whether the case is related to the incident in Jamaica.
“The police are confident and assures the safety of students and teachers are protected across the country. A thorough investigation will continue to be carried out on this matter,” he said. - Mkini
