Zaid Presses Nurul Izzah Tribunal Or More Explosive Rci
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has called on PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar to clarify her proposal for a tribunal to probe the alleged leak of Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting minutes, which implicated a senior judge in judicial interference.
He said that while taking action against the named judge may be relatively straightforward, the more “explosive” matter is the need for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate possible systemic abuse.
This includes whether the prime minister or his office delayed, obstructed, or interfered in the appointment of top judges.
Zaid (above) said a tribunal is merely a “mechanism to throw someone under the bus”, whereas a proper RCI would scrutinise whether anyone violated the law in the context of judicial appointments.
ADS“She needs to clarify the scope she’s advocating. Does she want an RCI to look into whether the JAC’s recommendations were (allegedly) ignored or delayed?
“To investigate if there are political considerations influencing the appointment of the new chief justice or Court of Appeal president?
“To explore whether the prime minister, her own father, played a role in either stalling or bypassing recommendations,” he told Malaysiakini.
This afternoon, Nurul Izzah, who is Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter, made a surprise appearance at a lawyers’ march in Putrajaya and called for an investigation into the alleged minutes.

Nurul Izzah Anwar (third from left) joining the lawyers’ march in PutrajayaShe suggested that the probe can be initiated by setting up an independent tribunal made up of five senior judges.
Zaid further asked if the PKR division chiefs who called for the suspension of former deputy president Rafizi Ramli and eight party lawmakers for demanding the RCI would take a similar stand on Nurul Izzah.
“Both appear to have breached party discipline,” he added.
Disciplinary action
Yesterday, 11 PKR divisions in Kedah joined the growing call to suspend Rafizi and the eight MPs for urging a royal commission of inquiry into the judiciary.
A day earlier, 19 division chiefs from Johor issued a similar statement.

Former PKR deputy president Rafizi RamliThe division chiefs, while reaffirming support for Anwar, who is also PKR president, accused the nine of breaching party discipline.
They cited violations of the PKR members’ code of ethics under Articles 10.1 and 10.2 of the party constitution, which require members to protect the party’s image, comply with its decisions, and avoid any form of internal sabotage.
In response, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh confirmed that the party is reviewing the calls for disciplinary action.
She said feedback from the divisions will be presented at the party’s central leadership council meeting in two weeks. - Mkini
