Saravanan To Nurul Izzah Show Proof You Worked For Indians
MIC deputy president M Saravanan today called on Nurul Izzah Anwar to substantiate her recent claims of working behind the scenes to address issues facing the ethnic Indian community.
ADSIn a statement to Malaysiakini, the Tapah MP said the PKR deputy president need not work silently as her party is part of the ruling government with the power to directly solve the community’s issues.
“We have utmost respect for Nurul Izzah, but want her to list down all the issues she has helped solve through her ‘behind the scenes’ approach.
“This is the mistake MIC made during the BN government’s rule, as we did not publicise our requests to the government for the Indian Malaysian community.
“In the context of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), we want to know what is in store for the Indian community? We do not want to be left out again and again.
“The community needs good constructive plans to move forward in various aspects,” Saravanan said.
Nurul Izzah yesterday defended her quiet approach to addressing Indian Malaysian issues, saying silence doesn’t equate to inaction.
She says she prefers working behind the scenes to achieve concrete results, rather than putting on a show.
“I believe in substance before theatrics,” she said in a statement when commenting on proposed initiatives to empower the Indian community under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
Elaborating further, Nurul Izzah shared her experience working with then-Klang MP Charles Santiago and other teams in a series of roundtables to discuss issues affecting Indian Malaysians.
She said the initiative to seek transformative solutions involved economists, government officials, NGO leaders, and community representatives.
Saravanan, however, said Indians must be allowed to evaluate if such efforts are sufficient, and when the time comes, the community must be able to assess whether the government of the day has delivered on what was promised.
ADSMIC’s suggestions
“MIC has submitted an eight-point agenda for the 13th Malaysia Plan, outlining clear and measurable reforms to address long-standing challenges faced by the Indian community.
“These include a call for streamlined and transparent disbursement of Mitra (Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit) funds to ensure they reach the right beneficiaries without political interference,” Saravanan said.
He said MIC has also proposed statutory annual allocations for Tamil schools, with guaranteed operational and infrastructure support, and enhanced skills training and reskilling programmes under technical and vocational education and training (TVET), specifically tailored for Indian youths.
Saravanan said that MIC’s proposals further include expanded access to tertiary education, particularly an increase in matriculation and public university placements for Indian students.
“We urged the government to ensure affordable housing quotas for Indian B40 households. Support for Indian women entrepreneurs was also a key component, including access to microcredit, grants, and training programmes.
“We stressed the importance of preserving Hindu religious institutions and cultural heritage, especially temples located on private land, and proposed legal safeguards for their protection.
“Finally, we called for the creation of a centralised Indian Community Development Blueprint to monitor, coordinate, and guide the effective delivery of all initiatives.
“We have made these proposals public because we believe the community has a right to know what we are fighting for. Let the people evaluate us based on what we have demanded and hold the government accountable for delivery.
“So today, we ask Nurul Izzah, if you are indeed working for the community, please start by disclosing what has been done or proposed on the matriculation intake issue. Let the Indian community see for themselves whether your silent efforts have translated into real, visible outcomes,” Saravanan said. - Mkini
