Zahid S Graft Case Of Public Interest Must Resume Next Week Says Court
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been admitted to hospital following a fall on Sunday.SHAH ALAM: The High Court granted an adjournment of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s foreign visa corruption trial scheduled today, but maintained that the hearing should resume on Sept 1 as it is a “public interest case”.
Judge Mohd Yazid Mustafa said the trial needed to proceed next week, depending on Zahid’s situation.
“I understand that he will be going for an operation, and how long he will take to recover is subject to the doctor’s confirmation.
“This is a public interest case, and the court hopes that the prosecution and defence can find a set of common dates for the hearing to continue,” he said.
Zahid is facing 40 charges of receiving bribes from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd over the government’s foreign visa system. The case was last heard on May 27.
Earlier, his lawyer, Ahmad Zaidi Zainal, told the court the former deputy prime minister and home minister had been hospitalised after a fall.
“Another High Court (judge) has summoned the doctor to explain his situation later today,” he said.
Yesterday, Zahid was absent from submission hearings at the Kuala Lumpur High Court for his other corruption case involving Yayasan Akalbudi funds following his admission to hospital on Sunday.
His lawyers said the defence could proceed with the submissions at the end of the prosecution’s case, but the prosecution maintained that Zahid’s presence was required under the law. - FMT
