Zahid Cautions Umno Against Hubris After Mahkota Win

Some Umno leaders have been thumping their chests following the party’s triumph in the Mahkota by-election in Johor but Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has warned against arrogance.
According to a source, the Umno president told the party’s supreme council meeting on Monday night that they should remain humble and continue to serve the people.
The source also said the issue of supreme council member Nur Jazlan Mohamed suggesting that Pakatan Harapan apologise for its accusations against Umno in the past was not discussed.
“The meeting was calm, and focused on the outcome of the Mahkota by-election…
“The president also thanked BN component parties and Harapan for their help during the campaign,” they told Malaysiakini.
Confirming this, another source said apart from the polls, the supreme council discussed the “pre-council” for the upcoming Parliament session, which begins next week.
Post-election alteraction
Yesterday, Zahid ruled out the need for Harapan to apologise and called on Umno leaders to stop “teasing” their allies.
In the Sept 28 contest for the Mahkota seat, Umno’s Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah emerged victorious with a majority of 20,648 votes over his rival, Haizan Jaafar, from Perikatan Nasional.
Following this, there were exchanges between Umno and DAP, with Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Tiong King Sing joining the fray, over the low turnout of Chinese voters.
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh also shared an article on Facebook which called him the “hero of BN” after pointing out that Umno retained the seat because of Malay voters.

In the run-up to the election, there were concerns that Akmal’s spat with DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok would deter the Chinese, who make up 30 percent of the electorate, from casting their ballots. - Mkini
