Youth Group Slams New Discriminatory Mrsm Admissions Policy

Youth movement Sekolah Semua has criticised the Mara Junior Science Colleges’ (MRSM) latest admissions policy, which states that only students from national schools would be allowed to apply for its 2022 intake.
Describing it as “discriminatory”, Sekolah Semua said it is deeply disappointed that students from non-national schools will not be able to apply to study in MRSM.
“This admissions policy would disqualify both bumiputera and non-bumiputera students attending vernacular schools, various Islamic schools, and private institutions.
“Effectively, students will be discriminated against based on education choices relating to linguistic, religious, socio-economic and special education needs,” the group said in a statement today.
The exclusion of students from applying based on these criteria goes against the spirit of Article 12(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution, it added.
Article 12(1)(a) states there shall be “no discrimination against any citizen on the grounds only of religion, race, descent or place of birth in the administration of any educational institution maintained by a public authority, and, in particular, the admission of pupils or students or the payment of fees”.

Sekolah Semua said it would be a great disservice to the MRSM students and also to the social cohesion in Malaysia if the diversity of the MRSM’s student body was to be limited.

“Sekolah Semua strongly condemns policies, intentional or unintentional, that lead to further segregation in the country,” it added. 
As such, the group urged Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and the Education Ministry to provide an explanation for this latest policy.
“We echo calls for a true keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian family) that does not exclude its members from being welcomed into its home,” it said. - Mkini
