Young Malay Revellers Slammed By Their Holier Than Thou Brethren For Insulting Sacred Islamic Month

THOU shall not party or have a good time.
That seems to be edict – or at the least view point – of some conservative elements when confronted with a video clip of youngsters screaming their hearts out at a New Year’s Eve bash.
Were they drinking alcohol or ingesting illicit narcotics? Were the participants engaged in Caligula-like debauchery?
Certainly nowhere close to hooliganism although concerns abound after the police confirmed four deaths at the Pinkfish New Year Eve concert at the Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach on Tuesday (Dec 31).

It would seem that what has irked the moral police is that most of the merry makers in the clip were Malay-Muslims clad in head scarves.
Their crime or sin? Clapping, singing and dancing to greet the new year.
The clip shared on the Wa Fans Facebook page drew plenty of condemnation from the holier- than-thou types as exemplified by the many negative comments.

One likened the crowd’s antics to primates in a zoo, justifying that that the New Year’s Eve fell on the Rajab which is the seventh month of the Islamic calendar and deemed as one of the four sacred months while another netizen explained the significance of the date.

One commenter surmised that such behaviour was a slur on Muslims in Malaysia while another lamented such shameless behaviour of today’s Malay youngsters.

A few couldn’t hide their disgust at the sight of females dancing in close proximity with members of the opposite gender though nothing untoward was reported.

Another echoed this sentiment by equating it to a Godless-country.

Some contended that this was a reflection of Malays who were only ‘Muslims’ on their identity cards.

One sought to lay the blame on the organiser of the event, reckoning that they should know better as it was an important date in the Islamic calendar.

However, one commenter came to the defence of the youngsters by reasoning that there was nothing wrong with such celebrations as it signified the joy of making it through the year and being given the chance to experience a new one.

Regardless that New Year’s Eve fell on a significant date on the Islamic calendar, the many negative comments are symptomatic of those who have little regard for civil liberties or individual choice.
Just think about it for a moment. What are the alternatives?
Bar Muslims from such events? Or perhaps completely ban such events that clashes with religious dates?
Whatever the option, it makes for an unpleasant reality for those who believe in individual choice or for non-Muslims who would like to celebrate New Year’s Eve with a bit of merry making. – Focus Malaysia
