Why Some Rich People Sell Their House

I used to wonder about this.
Why would rich people want to sell their beautiful, luxurious homes?
At first, I thought — maybe they’re having financial problems.
But as I later learned, not everyone sells their house because of money.
There are many other reasons.
And one of the biggest ones… is loneliness.
Yes, loneliness.
Back then, whenever I visited those grand homes owned by wealthy families who wanted to sell, I’d look around in awe.
The living room was as big as a football field — enough space for the kids to run and roll around!
The house had everything: a swimming pool, jacuzzi, wide open spaces, and rooms for every purpose.
If they wanted to throw a birthday party, they could invite the whole neighborhood and still have space to spare!
In the backyard, you could have a barbecue, play music with friends, or just relax under the stars. Everything was perfect — or so I thought.
The kitchens were like those on cooking shows — both a wet and a dry one, fully equipped and sparkling clean.
The bedrooms? So many that no one would ever have to wait for the bathroom!
It all seemed like a dream.
A life of comfort and success.
But that’s what it looks like from the outside.
When I actually spoke to the owners — most of them now elderly — I began to understand the truth.
They would smile and say,
“If we could turn back time, we wouldn’t buy such a big house, Zuki. It’s exhausting now.”
At first, I thought — what are they saying? Aren’t they grateful?
But then they explained.
“When we were young, we worked hard to give our children the best.
We wanted them to be comfortable, to have their own rooms, their own space.
We thought we were doing the right thing.”
They spent their youth working, saving, building wealth — and in the process, built big houses filled with dreams.
But as time passed, the children grew up, moved out, and started their own lives.
The big house that was once full of laughter became silent.
Now, only one room is used — usually on the ground floor, because climbing the stairs is too tiring.
Sometimes, the old maid’s room near the kitchen becomes the most convenient place to stay — close to food, close to everything.
Their many cars? Most have been sold.
No point keeping them when there’s nowhere to go and no energy to drive.
The big empty porch now feels even emptier.

So, they decided to downsize.
To live simply.
To enjoy what’s left of life — quietly, peacefully, without too many worries.
“We just want a small house now,” one of them said softly.
“One that fits just the two of us. Maybe back in the village. We miss the peace there.”
Listening to their words made me stop and think.
Here I was, dreaming of a mansion, thinking it would make me happy.
But what if, one day, I end up just like them — sitting in silence, surrounded by empty rooms?
No wonder people always say, live in moderation.
Why didn’t I listen sooner? 😂
Now I understand why my wife always stops me from going overboard.
When I said I wanted a corner-lot house with a swimming pool, he told me,
“Just book a hotel with a pool if you want to swim.”
And you know what? I don’t even swim! 🤪
When I wanted to buy a new car, she said,
“Use what we already have. It’s enough to get us where we need to go.”
All this time, I thought she was just being stingy.
Turns out, she’s just wiser.
She’s already “grown old” in his thinking — long before I did.
Forgive me, my dear wife. Now I understand. 💞

So, if you want to experience that grand lifestyle, sure — go ahead and buy that huge house with 11 rooms and parking for 10 cars! There’s nothing wrong with owning a big home — as long as you can truly afford it.
But pretending to be rich? That’s where we go wrong.
Live simply. Be grateful for what you have.
And if you’re blessed with more — share it.
Give to those in need. Support good causes.
Because as one wise man once said:
“What you own isn’t really yours.
What you give — that’s what truly belongs to you.”
