Water Supply Fully Restored In 2 Seberang Perai Districts
Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and Penang Water Supply Corporation CEO K Pathmanathan at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant in Tasek Gelugor, Seberang Perai Utara.GEORGE TOWN: Water supply to two of the three main districts in Seberang Perai has been fully restored.
Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said water supply to Seberang Perai Utara and Seberang Perai Tengah was back to 100% at 3pm today.
Supply to Seberang Perai Selatan was at 60%, Chow said in a Facebook post.
“(We are) anticipating that Seberang Perai Selatan will likely reach a 100% recovery rate by either later today or early morning tomorrow,” he said.
Earlier today, deputy energy transition and public utilities minister Akmal Nasir said nearly 60% of the 590,000 accounts affected by scheduled water cuts in Penang have had their water supply restored.
Penang began a four-day scheduled water supply disruption yesterday to enable decades-old pipes to be replaced.
Meanwhile, state-owned Buletin Mutiara quoted Chow as saying that 85% of the water supply in the Timur Laut district on Penang island has been recovered as of 1.30pm.
However, the Barat Daya district is facing slower progress because of numerous localities being situated at the “end of the line”.
“Nevertheless, upon the complete normalisation of water supply across Seberang Perai and the northeast district, all voluntary fire brigades, along with water tankers from other states, will be mobilised to provide assistance to residents in the Barat Daya district,” Chow said.
Penang Water Supply Corporation CEO K Pathmanathan had said earlier that only 5% of the accounts in the Barat Daya district have had their water supply restored. - FMT
