Warisan S Rep In Selangor To Sit Out State Elections
Teratai state assemblyman Bryan Lai says he agrees with Warisan’s decision to stay out of the state elections. (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Bryan Lai, Warisan’s sole assembly member in Peninsular Malaysia, will sit out the coming Selangor state elections in line with the party’s decision.
“I won’t even stand as an independent candidate,” Lai told FMT. He said he had promised Warisan president Shafie Apdal that he would help Pakatan Harapan in the elections.
“Having served three terms as a councillor with the Kajang Municipal Council and one term as the Teratai state assemblyman, I’m satisfied and happy to support Warisan in any way I can,” said Lai.
Shafie has stated that the party would not take part in the elections but would focus on strengthening its position in Sabah and on supporting PH’s election campaigns.
“The timing of Warisan’s move to Peninsular Malaysia wasn’t quite right,” Lai admitted, expressing hope his party would continue to aid in the success of the federal coalition government. “I hope the unity government will be successful over the next five years, and that we will be a part of that.”
Elections to the state assemblies of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu are due this year and are likely to be held in July.
In the parliamentary general election in November, Warisan contested 52 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, comprising 25 in Sabah, one in Labuan, and the rest in West Malaysia. It won 3 seats, all in Sabah. - FMT
