Villagers Confused Over Emco At Kampung Lingkudau Sabah

Keningau police chief says barbed wire fences were put up a day late due to logistical problems.KOTA KINABALU: The execution of the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) in Kampung Lingkudau in Keningau, Sabah has left villagers confused due to the lack of specific instructions or enforcement.
On Sunday, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that an EMCO was to take effect at Kampung Lingkudau from March 15 to 28.
He added that this was necessary as 19 Covid-19 positive cases were detected from 102 screenings carried out in the locality.
However, several residents said they were unclear with the terms of the EMCO as only certain roads in the village were fenced with barbed wire.
Civil servants in the village were also unsure if they were allowed to go to work as usual as they hadn’t been informed nor updated about the EMCO.
It is understood that the authorities had set up tents on certain routes, although vehicles and people were still permitted to move in and out freely yesterday, the first day of the lockdown, while barbed wire fences were only installed today.
“Some people said we aren’t under EMCO, so I went to work as usual yesterday without encountering any roadblocks. I noticed a tent with a police officer but all he did was sit there so I assumed my area wasn’t under the EMCO.
“Today, however, when I wanted to go home, the entrance to my house was blocked with barbed wire,” said a villager who declined to be named.
Another villager said the slow enforcement by the authorities caused many villagers to “flee” to other areas.
Meanwhile, Keningau police chief Shahrudin Mat Husain told FMT that the barbed wire fences were only put up today due to logistical problems.
He said not all areas in Kampung Lingkudau were subject to the EMCO, which explained why only certain routes were blocked. - FMT
