PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian university has made its debut in the top 250 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for the first time.
In the 2025 edition, Universiti Teknologi Petronas moved into the 201-250 band, up from last year’s 301-350 band, becoming Malaysia’s highest-ranked institution out of 2,092 universities worldwide.
The second-highest is Universiti Malaya, staying in the 251-300 band, while Sunway University made the biggest leap, rising from the 601-800 band to 401-500.
Four other universities – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia – also ranked in the top 500.
In a statement, THE said Malaysia’s good scores in the research excellence and research influence metrics contributed significantly to its performance, and it is particularly successful in the international metrics.
THE’s global affairs officer, Phil Baty, noted significant changes in Malaysian higher education, particularly the focus on attracting more international students and enhancing research capabilities.
He said these efforts were
paying dividends as a university breaks into the top 250 of THE’s World University Rankings 2025.
Of Malaysia’s 23 universities, four improved, three declined, and 15 maintained their positions.
Management and Science University (MSU) entered the 801-1000 band for the first time.
