Universities Urged To Improve Accessibility For Disabled Persons
The management of both public and private universities is urged to enhance their facilities and services for persons with disabilities (PWD) in their institutions as part of initiatives to broaden educational opportunities for this group.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Mustapha Sakmud said all higher education institutions need to be attentive to the needs of PWDs and can take the Return to University (R2U) procedure implemented by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) as an example of creating an inclusive ecosystem for the group.
Through the R2U procedure, UiTM has set a new standard in managing disabilities, providing a safe teaching, learning, and working environment for all individuals to return to university after recovering or stabilising from injuries or illnesses, he said.
“The R2U procedure at UiTM is in line with 20th principle of the Higher Education Roadmap 2024, which emphasises that the country’s higher education sector needs to be inclusive and open to all, including PWDs, covering students, lecturers and university staff.
“This initiative is also aligned with the six core values of Madani Malaysia, namely Sustainability, Prosperity, Innovation, Respect, Trust and Compassion,” he said during the launch of the R2U procedure and the Appreciation Ceremony for the Certification of Professional Management for PWDs yesterday.
Mustapha said the implementation of the R2U procedure can also reduce medical costs or compensation related to employment and learning in the higher education sector while minimising the loss of talent among those who are still able to serve.
During the event, UiTM was also awarded the Malaysia Book of Records certificate in recognition of its initiative to transcribe 250 digital books into Braille format.
“This is a commendable effort and achievement because this initiative will enable more UiTM students and employees among PWDs to access knowledge resources.
“This recognition proves that digital development at UiTM does not marginalise PWDs, as aspired by the government,” he added.
