Unhealthy Trend Of Washing Dirty Linen In Public Among Malaysian Social Media Influencers On The Rise
“REALITY TV, to me, is the museum of social decay,” award-winning actor Gary Oldman once quipped.
Reality TV and by extension social media has drastically changed the boundaries of how people interact and consume media.
A case in point are recent clips of an influencer couple having a domestic quarrel that has gone viral.
Shared on X by mhmmdhsm (@mhmmdhsm), it was noted that the husband turned livid when the wife constantly shared domestic issues live on social media.
More pertinently, the husband could be seen declaring “Talak 2” on his spouse, signifying that this is the second time a marriage is potentially dissolved within the framework of Islamic law.

While any incidence of domestic unhappiness is deeply regrettable, placing such content on ‘live’ social media feed is highly questionable.
What was the outcome or reactions expected?
The post has thus far generated 2.4M views at the time of writing with many netizens also calling into question the motives of the wife for washing dirty linen in full view of social media.
The poster also remarked that sympathy will be in short supply when videos that seek to play up a victim mentality is uploaded.

Many questioned the motives of the wife for sharing such content. One commenter remarked that this was attention-seeking of the most extreme manner.

Another commented that the video clips lacked context and by sharing them, the couple’s problems became subject to conjecture. Nobody knows for sure what sparked the family conflict. What benefit would this public airing of grievances achieve, he wondered?

Editor’s Note: The clip below might provide more insight into what led to the Talak 2 divorce declaration by the husband.
One netizen noted that with the multitudes sharing the clips, it just exacerbates matters.

Another commented that things have gone up “another level” with declarations of divorce previously being made privately on messaging service WhatsApp. That was already bad enough. Now, the whole argument and declaration has been beamed live on social media.

Sexist comments were not far from the surface with one commenter who claimed that modern women no longer respected their husbands. Why? They had found the ability to earn their own income.

Easy to blame the women folk of today, claimed one netizen who was clearly non-plussed that many comments placed the blame squarely on the ladies. She further argued that it is very unfair to put all married women of today in the same basket.

Echoing Oldman’s quote above, one netizen was at a loss to understand the younger generation’s obsession with social media. There seems to be no boundaries as to what could be shared.

Social decay – where everything is reduced to bite-sized videos to be easily consumed and for netizens to pass judgements on.
Sad but true. – Focus Malaysia
