Umno Veteran Hopes Weekend Meet Will End Party S Woes
The Umno Veterans Club hopes the party's annual general assembly this weekend will provide closure for the party amid a split on whether to ditch Perikatan Nasional and Bersatu in the next general election.
"I hope after the annual general assembly on March 28, the problems in Umno will come to an end and we can go back to focusing on uniting the party for the 15th general election," said Umno Veterans Club secretary-general Mustapha Yaakub (above).
He added that Umno had a bigger agenda to worry about.
The AGM will run for two days over this weekend.
The AGM is expected to reaffirm Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's push to cut ties with Bersatu in the next general election, but it remains to be seen if those opposed to the move will put up a fight.
Umno Youth exco Mustafa Shah Abdul Hamid said the AGM was the right platform to raise issues but should not devolve into personal attacks.
"If there are any issues, this is the platform to raise them through the right channels. It should not become a platform to attack each other.
"The Umno AGM is not a place for personal attacks against the leadership or anyone. We should focus on GE15," Mustafa Shah told Malaysiakini.
Umno's Ketereh MP Annuar Musa has been Zahid's most vocal critic for steering the Umno supreme council towards ending ties with Bersatu.
Annuar was removed as Umno secretary-general last year and later sacked as BN secretary-general over his perceived close ties with PN. -Mkini
