Umno To Set Dates For General Assembly Branch Elections

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the Registrar of Societies made minor changes to amendments to the party constitution.PONTIAN: Umno’s Supreme Council will meet next week to discuss minor amendments made by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) on rules for party elections, and will set dates for the party’s general assembly and for branch elections.
The branch elections had been scheduled for September but amendments to the party constitution now provide for party elections to be held after a general election.
Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the party will abide by the requirements set by the RoS regarding the minor changes to its proposed amendments to the party’s constitution that were approved yesterday.
He said only a few changes were made by the RoS, namely that party elections at all levels be held no more than six months after the general election is held.

“Many things have been maintained in the approved amendment, in line with Umno’s wishes. One election per term has been set, another is that elections are held after the general election for Umno branches, divisions, and the Youth and Puteri wings.
“Also maintained is that party elections are held once every three years. However, the Supreme Council can postpone them not more than six months after a general election,” he told reporters here.
Ahmad, who is Pontian MP, said the Aug 4 meeting will set new dates for party branch elections which were originally fixed for September.
“The meeting will also touch on the division annual meetings and the Umno assembly which should have taken place in November and December.
“We will reset the dates and decide that there will be no branch, division and Supreme Council elections. This means the (party) elections will be held after the general election.
“There is no necessity to hold party elections in the near future, so that we can focus more on the general election. Current party positions will remain until then, this is to stabilise the party in facing the polls,” he said. - FMT
