Umno Spells Out New Terms Seeks Supreme Council Advice Ahmad Maslan
Umno has laid out its new terms for continuing political cooperation with Perikatan Nasional, according to Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.
He told Malaysiakini this evening that the list had been conveyed during a video conference with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, which took about 40 minutes, on Wednesday.
"We have conveyed the main issues to the chairperson of PN, who is also the PM, on Wednesday," Ahmad said.
Also part of the meeting was Umno treasurer Tengku Adnan Mansor. He and Ahmad were both representing party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in discussing the new terms with Muhyiddin.
According to Ahmad, PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin had then contacted them yesterday, seeking for the details to be presented in writing.
Ahmad, the Pontian MP, said that he could only write them out for Muhyiddin after Umno concluded its supreme council meeting next Tuesday.
"The supreme council meeting will decide if there is anything to add and to gauge other views on the matter," he said.
Ahmad declined to reveal what were among the terms that Umno had laid out to PN.
He also turned down requests to clarify speculations including claims that Umno was seeking the deputy prime minister's post for the party.
"Let the speculations be. For us, we will not reveal until the time comes.n What's important is that the other side knows what we are asking for and we know what we are asking."
Earlier today, the politician told Malay daily Sinar Harian that Muhyiddin had asked Umno to state its demands.
Ahmad, who was visiting his constituency of Pontian today, was also asked if Umno was threatening the prime minister.
He merely said that this was up to people to decide.
He added there was a need for a written agreement after Umno lost the position of Sabah chief minister to Bersatu after the state election on Sept 26.
In a separate development, Ahmad maintained that Umno did not intend to file a motion of no-confidence against Muhyiddin, according to Harian Metro.
He said Umno's Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's push for a no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin was a personal move and not related to the party.
He also downplayed speculations of a split within Umno with one faction backing Muhyiddin and another looking to form a new government with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
"The issue of Umno splitting as being played up does not arise," he was quoted as saying. - Mkini
