Umno Polls Ros Has To Decide By July 16 Ismail Sabri
The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has until July 16 to approve Umno's amendments to the party's constitution and delay its internal election, according to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
"No (response) yet. It is within 60 days... and if I am not mistaken (the deadline is) on July 16. We are still waiting," said Ismail Sabri at the sidelines of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress triennial delegates conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Ismail Sabri, who is the Umno vice-president, was asked if ROS had approved Umno's decision to amend its constitution to delay elections until after the next general election.
Separately, an article in The Star today cited Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan stating that the party has not heard back from ROS since May 17 when the notice on the constitutional amendment was submitted.
"It is not fair of ROS to act this way. Give us an answer instead of making us wait like this. If it is a yes, thank you very much.
"If it is a no, also thank you very much. We can then make preparations to hold our party election. ROS must respond or else we may have to get a court order," said Mohamad.
The same article also cited Umno supreme council member Sharkar Shamsudin questioning the perceived delayed approval.
"Why is ROS sitting on our application? ROS allowed MCA and Parti Gerakan to make the same changes to their party constitution," said Sharkar.
ROS took more than a year to grant MCA the green light. MCA submitted its paperwork in December 2019. Its constitutional amendments were finally approved by ROS only in March this year. - Mkini
