Um Panned After Anwar Najib Debate Venue Changed
Former student activist Fahmi Zainol has criticised Universiti Malaya (UM) after the venue for a debate between opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and ex-prime minister Najib Abdul Razak had to be changed.
Fahmi claimed the university tried to frustrate attempts by the student union, Kesatuan Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya (KMUM), to organise the debate at Dewan Tunku Canselor in UM, Kuala Lumpur.
"I am disappointed at the restrictions imposed on KMUM to organise the debate with the main organiser in UM, which is supposed to be an institution that should be a platform that encourages dialogues, exchange of ideas, and forums that benefit the people," he said.
Yesterday, it was announced that the debate will now take place at the Malaysia Tourism Centre (Matic) in Kuala Lumpur.
They are set to debate two topics. Firstly, on whether the government should bail out ailing Sapura Energy Bhd. Secondly, they will debate the issue of Malaysia's future in terms of the economy, politics, and direction.
Fahmi (above) said the restrictions imposed by UM’s management hindered the organisation of the debate on the varsity’s premises.
This, he added, went against the spirit of academic freedom and sets a bad precedent.
Fahmi, a former UM student, was also suspended in 2014 for organising a gathering featuring Anwar.
"We cannot compromise with any attempts to curb academic freedom on campuses," said Fahmi, who is contesting for the position of PKR Youth chief in the upcoming party polls.
The debate will take place on May 12 at 9pm and will be aired live. - Mkini
