JOHOR POLLS | Five parties will be making their electoral debut in the Johor legislative assembly election.
Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), the second party founded by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in five years, will field 42 candidates.
Most of their candidates are fielded in Malay majority areas and are involved in four-corner contests.
This party - a breakaway from Bersatu - has four MPs and five assemblypersons from other states in the ranks.
The debutant with the second largest number of candidates was Muda, fielding seven candidates.
Sabah-based Warisan has fielded six candidates.
Both Muda and Warisan have targeted a variety of constituency profiles.
Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), headed by Ibrahim Ali, will be fielding one candidate.
The party made its electoral debut during the Malacca elections in November last year. None of its candidates kept their deposits.
PSM will be fielding one candidate for Johor.
Despite having participated in elections since 1999, this is the first time that PSM has fielded a candidate in Johor.
No straight fights
According to the Election Commission, there are 16 independent candidates.
The three main coalitions for this election are BN, Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan. Harapan has an electoral pact with Muda, except for the Larkin seat.
There are no straight fights or walkovers in this election. More than half (35 out of 56 contests) will see a four-way fight, and two contests involve an eight-way fight.
The oldest candidate is Tosrin Jarvanthi, 71 of PN-Bersatu. He will be defending his seat for Bukit Permai.
The two youngest candidates are Kelly Chye of BN-MCA and Muhammad Airel Zabridin of Pejuang, who are fielded in Mengkibol and Tangkak, respectively. Both are 26 years of age. - Mkini
