The Environmental Impact Of Using Glass
We use glass in a lot of different things. From glass partition Malaysia to fizzy glass drink bottles, we have our fair share of choices when it comes to glass. They are used in our packaging, decorations, home decor, functions, and the list goes on. We are in a world, where we simply cannot imagine living without glass.
Glass is a popular choice for businesses and consumers because we think of it as so much more environmentally friendlier than the rest of the options. Millions of microplastic floating in the ocean, in our food and womb have scared us, and glass seems a lot safer option. While glass is no plastic, it also happens to be equally problematic for our environment. It is not all peaches and roses when it comes to sustainability.
Several studies have suggested that glass bottles are also bad for our environment. Glass bottles are made from abundant natural raw materials such as sand. The abundance of sand makes us believe that is so much better than plastic but that is until we think about the process of making the glass. Manufacturing of glass requires an incredibly high melting point which burns a lot of energy, thus contributing to the drastic effects of climate change. As more and more nonrenewable energy sources burn, the more there are carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming. The last thing we need is more products that deplete our ozone layer and increase the rising temperature and sea levels.
Many of the glass we use also happen to be single-use products. The drink bottles, packaging, coffee cups, and so on. Every year so many single-use glass bottles get dumped into our ocean and landfill which increases the level of pollution. The million of glass in the ocean have caused major disruptions to ecosystems and disturbances in marine life. It also has overfilled the landfills as they sit there without ever being recycled. The pollution not only comes from the excess usage but also its making. When molding and melting the glass releases a considerable amount of atmospheric emissions such as Sulphur Dioxide as well as Nitrogen Dioxide. Air pollution is not the only pollution that is concerning but also water pollution.
While glass is not all perfect, it is still one of the most sustainable materials to be used and made. What’s even better is the usage of recycled glass which has a great impact on the sustainability of the product. Glass is recyclable fully. The process of recycling glass is highly appreciated as it has both environmental and economic benefits. Many companies and governments have joined forces to create glass recycling campaigns to increase the number of glass that gets recycled. It is important to keep an eye out for all the glass we use as consumers. Getting it recycled or reducing its single-use is our duty. Recycling alone does not fix the problem but improving our reusing of glass is a massive help for our environment. You can pick up on fun projects for glasses and take on new initiatives to improve your own glass recycling process.
