Umno’s Noor Azleen Ambros has called on the party’s supporters to vote for PH candidates at tomorrow’s by-election as a show of support for state menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi (left). (Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Johor Umno Youth has called on the party’s grassroots to back Pakatan Harapan candidates ahead of tomorrow’s by-elections, as a show of support for Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
State youth wing chief Noor Azleen Ambros said that while he understands that Malay voters may have reservations about PH and some of the coalition’s “personalities”, there was a need to “look at the bigger picture”.
“In this by-election, the stability of the state government under Onn Hafiz is at stake.
“We urge the Umno grassroots and our Malay supporters to consider Onn Hafiz’s achievements over the past two years,” he said in a statement.
Noor Azleen said a vote for candidates of the unity coalition will also be seen as a show of support for Onn Hafiz.
He said voters should view tomorrow’s polls as a way to ensure Onn Hafiz remains in power.
“Don’t cut off the nose to spite the face.”
The Simpang Jeram state seat and Pulai parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub in July.
Last month, FMT quoted Pulai Umno chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed as saying that he expected Malay voters to lodge protest votes at the polls in the opposition’s favour.
The Umno Supreme Council member said this could be due to the current economic conditions and dissatisfaction over the party’s cooperation with Pakatan Harapan.
Any shift, however, would not be as significant as the one seen in the recent six state elections, he said. - FMT
