Business titan Robert Kuok has once again secured the top position on the 2025 Forbes list of Malaysia’s 50 Richest.KUALA LUMPUR: Business titan Robert Kuok has once again secured the top position on the 2025 Forbes list of Malaysia's 50 Richest, maintaining his reign with a net worth of US$11.4 billion.
At 101 years old, Kuok remains a towering figure in the Malaysian business landscape. His diversified empire—spanning agribusiness to hospitality under the Kuok Group—continues to thrive, with the conglomerate now setting its sights on an ambitious data centre development in Johor.
The ranks of the three richest Malaysians were unchanged from a year ago, according to Forbes Asia.
Hong Leong Group patriarch Quek Leng Chan strengthened his position as the second richest person with a US$1 billion jump in his net worth to US$9.8 billion, buoyed by robust sales at his family's finance-to-food conglomerate.
The Teh siblings, heirs to the Public Bank fortune, retained the third spot with their wealth rising nine per cent to US$5.9 billion.
Forbes Asia noted that Malaysia's buoyant initial public offering (IPO) market saw 55 listings in 2024; however, the benchmark stock index remained sluggish and was pushed down further after the US tariff shock.
But a stronger ringgit, up more than five per cent in the past 12 months, helped to lift the collective wealth of tycoons on the 2025 Forbes list of Malaysia's 50 Richest to US$90 billion, from US$83.4 billion last year.
Meanwhile, aluminium magnates Koon Poh Keong & siblings moved up one spot to No. 4 after a modest boost took their net worth to US$5.4 billion.
Debuting at No. 5 are the heirs of the late Ananda Krishnan. The Krishnan family enters the list with US$5.3 billion after the reclusive telecom-to-energy tycoon passed away in November at the age of 86.
Among other notable entries, Lee Thiam Wah, founder of 99 Speed Mart Retail Holdings, entered the rankings at No. 8 with US$3.5 billion.
He became a billionaire after taking his company public in September, raising US$532 million in Malaysia's biggest IPO in seven years.
Jeffrey Cheah climbed to No. 9, adding US$600 million to his net worth, which now stands at US$3 billion. His property group Sunway is planning to list its healthcare arm next year, contributing to the gains.
Another new entrant is former police officer Tan Boon Hock (No. 40, US$490 million), whose ventures include a chain of laser eye surgery clinics and an AI-powered traffic management systems company.
The list's sole returnee is Desmond Lim Siew Choon (No. 44, US$420 million), who re-entered the rankings thanks to higher rentals at his Pavilion Reit properties.
In total, 30 individuals saw their wealth increase over the past year.
The minimum net worth to enter the list edged up to US$335 million from US$320 million previously.
