(Bernama pic)KOTA KINABALU: Chief minister Hajiji Noor said the state government will investigate whether a board member of the state government-linked company (GLC) Sawit Kinabalu is the same person who claimed that he had entered Malaysia in 1984 and later obtained citizenship via dubious means.
Hajiji said although he had only heard about the matter through social media, the government would still conduct an investigation.
“I have no further information but the name mentioned is of the person we have appointed to Sawit Kinabalu as a board member. He is the chairman of Sabah MIC, which is a Barisan Nasional (BN) component,” he said at a press conference.
Recently, a group of activists in Sabah questioned the identity of Sabah MIC chief Peer Mohamad Kadir, who is said to share the same name as an individual from India who entered the state in 1984.
The group also demanded that the state government clarify the matter after claims surfaced that a person with this name had acquired Malaysian citizenship via dubious means.
The individual with this name had also made a confession on this matter to the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah, in 2013.
Meanwhile, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Maximus Ongkili urged the authorities to conduct a background check on the Sabah MIC chief.
“PBS is concerned about allegations that he had entered Sabah from India in 1984 and obtained an identity card six years later through dubious means,” he said after chairing the PBS Supreme Council meeting yesterday.
Maximus, who is also federal Sabah and Sarawak affairs minister, said PBS Youth would lodge a police report on the matter soon so that a probe could be initiated.
“We hope the investigation will open up ‘pandora’s box’. If the allegations are true, we want to know how he obtained his citizenship, as well as other information, so that appropriate action can be taken,” he said. - FMT
