(Bernama pic)KOTA KINABALU: Perikatan Nasional component Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) remains steadfast in its support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, despite the intense pressure for him to step down.
Its president, Jeffrey Kitingan, said Muhyiddin was constitutionally still the prime minister.
“Parliament will have the opportunity to determine his legitimacy as the prime minister in September,” the Keningau MP said in a statement here today.
“In the meantime, all of these claims that he is a traitor to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong are baseless, and frankly, extremely distracting at a time when we should all be working together, both the government and the opposition, to battle Covid-19.”
Muhyiddin had stressed yesterday that he was not quitting despite pressure from Umno and other opposition parties for him to do so.
He said the issue of him resigning did not arise as he still enjoyed sufficient support in the Dewan Rakyat.
Muhyiddin also said his government would table a motion of confidence in Parliament in September to test his majority.
Kitingan, the sole STAR MP in the Dewan Rakyat, pointed out that the government’s efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic are being jeopardised by the continual political disruptions, which are undermining any attempt to carry out the national recovery plan as scheduled.
He said almost 20,000 new Covid-19 cases were detected in Malaysia yesterday, with the numbers projected to rise in the coming weeks.
“What saddens me is that, during the four days of (the special) Parliament sitting, the opposition was insistent about playing politics while contributing nothing to the fight against Covid-19.
“What we need now is the government’s undivided commitment to ensuring Malaysia is on the right path toward economic recovery.
“The opposition must be courteous enough to allow the government to carry out this plan,” he said. - FMT
