Socks Issue July 15 For Agc Decision On Kk Mart Founder Wife Representation
The Shah Alam Sessions Court has set July 15 for mention to update on whether the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) would allow a representation by KK Mart founder Chai Kee Kan and his wife Loh Siew Mui over the socks with “Allah” word controversy.
The husband and wife's counsel David Gurupatham confirmed the outcome when contacted.
During the mention of the case today, the prosecution team informed judge Muhamad Anas Mahadzir that they had received the duo's representation issued on May 17.
Under the law, a letter of representation is an attempt by the accused for AGC to drop or reduce the criminal charges.
The AGC had also received representation by Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, the Batu Pahat-based firm alleged to have supplied the socks bearing the word "Allah" to KK Mart.
The prosecution team also sought another mention date to allow them to consider the representations.
Claimed trial
On March 26, Chai and Loh, as directors of KK Mart, claimed trial on the charge of intentional hurting of the religious feelings of others, linked to the sale of the socks on a display, as allegedly seen by a customer.
The duo was accused of committing the offence at an outlet in Bandar Sunway, at 6.30am on March 13.
The charge was framed under Section 298 of the Penal Code, which specifies imprisonment up to a year or a fine, or both.
Before the same Sessions Court, Xin Jian Chang directors Soh Chin Huat, Goh Li Huay, and Soh Hui San faced a charge of conspiring to intentionally wound the religious sensitivities of Muslims.
Soh, 61, and Goh, 62, and their 36-year-old daughter Hui San, claimed trial for committing the offence at the same place, time and date.
The trio were charged under Section 109 of the Penal Code, read with Section 298 of the same Code, which provides for a prison sentence not exceeding a year or a fine, or both. - Mkini
