Slow Reforms Give Govt Time Pm Tells Suaram

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on the human rights group, Suaram, to be more objective in its criticism of his administration in delivering reforms and introducing policies in the country.
Anwar reiterated the government's commitment to protecting human rights, urging Suaram to “give the government time” and look forward to the next parliamentary sessions for the reforms.
“We're dealing with the rakyat. We have seen the blunder with (the attempted ratification of) Icerd (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination),” Anwar told reporters today.
He said this after performing the Friday prayers at Masjid Jamiul Ehsan in Sungai Buloh, Kuala Lumpur.
Also present were Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, Sungai Buloh MP R Ramanan and Ampang PKR division chief Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman, popularly known as Altimet.
Yesterday, Suaram said that Anwar will be the worst prime minister if he fails to deliver the reforms that Pakatan Harapan has touted over the years.
Anti-Icerd protest in 2018In 2018, the then-Harapan government backpedalled on its decision to ratify Icerd following several protests.
Citing Icerd as a “total political blunder”, Anwar advised Suaram to learn from experience and not easily pass judgement on the government’s pace in executing reforms.
“To pass a judgement in such a hasty manner, I don't think it's wise for them (Suaram).
“On Icerd, it’s not because of the law per se but the arrogance of power assuming everyone must support us without even taking a serious attempt to explain the matter to the masses.”
The Pakatan Harapan chairperson stressed the government had taken measures and looked into institutional reforms and legislations pertaining to human rights. - Mkini
