PETALING JAYA: The use of single-use plastic bags will be prohibited in forest reserves, national and state parks, marine parks, and geological heritage sites and geosites nationwide.
Natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the decision was made after the first meeting this year of the environment ministers and state executive councillors, which he chaired.
The ban will also be enforced at permanent commercial premises such as supermarkets, convenience stores at petrol stations, fast-food chains, pharmacy outlets, and other related businesses.
However, Nik Nazmi said implementation methods would be refined and adapted according to the capacity and readiness of individual states.
“This initiative is intended to educate the public on the importance of using environmentally friendly materials for the well-being of future generations,” he said in a statement today.
Nik Nazmi also said that federal and state government cooperation would be strengthened to combat illegal e-waste processing activities.
“Strict enforcement action will be taken against illegal premises involved in unlicensed e-waste processing in their respective states,” he said, adding that the move would send a clear message that the government would not compromise on enforcement.
E-waste management in Malaysia is governed by the Environmental Quality Act 1974, which prohibits illegal dumping and the unlicensed processing of scheduled waste.
It was reported that over 200 illegal e-waste recycling facilities are operating across Malaysia, with several reported in Rawang and Hulu Selangor.
In a separate effort to promote sustainable living, the ministry has also launched a “Green Practices Guide for Sustainable Open Houses” to encourage eco-friendly celebrations during festive seasons. - FMT
