Since When Were Opposition Votes Exclusive To Ph Asks Shafie
Shafie Apdal says Pakatan Harapan suffered heavy losses in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections despite Warisan not participating in them.JOHOR BAHRU: Warisan president Shafie Apdal has dismissed claims that his party would end up splitting votes for the opposition in the Johor state elections.
Speaking to reporters after a walkabout in Johor Jaya today, he questioned those who made such claims, saying that votes for the opposition do not exclusively “belong” to Pakatan Harapan (PH).
“Since when did votes belong to them (PH)? Voters don’t belong to a party. Voters don’t belong to Umno, Barisan Nasional, DAP or PKR.
“We are not splitting the votes. The people will choose who they want to vote for. Don’t assume that any vote belongs to your party. Malaysians have a right to vote for whoever they want,” Shafie said.
The Semporna MP also pointed out that although Warisan did not contest in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections, PH suffered heavy losses in both polls.
“It is a clear sign that the people no longer support PH. This is why Warisan decided to field candidates in Johor,” he said.
Shafie said he had campaigned for DAP and PKR in the last general election (GE14) in both Sabah and Johor, and helped PH’s Hassan Karim defeat former Johor menteri besar Khaled Nordin for the Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat.
Shafie then criticised PH for making BN its main opponent in the Johor elections after having signed the memorandum of understanding with Putrajaya last September.
The former Sabah chief minister said he was quite popular in Johor, pointing out that when he was an Umno vice-president, among the state chapters that voted in his favour was Johor.
He added that some former Umno and MCA members have even joined Warisan. - FMT
