Set Up Rci On Tommy Thomas Inquest On Adib Too Govt Told
Shahidan Kassim tells Ismail Sabri Yaakob that these three issues are of public interest.PETALING JAYA: The Perikatan Nasional Backbenchers Club has asked Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to focus his attention on setting up two Royal Commission of Inquiries (RCIs) – one on Lembaga Tabung Haji and the other on former attorney-general Tommy Thomas.
They also want Ismail Sabri to speed up the second inquest into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Kassim.
Its chairman Shahidan Kassim said the three issues were crucial because they were of public interest and a way to restore the people’s confidence in government institutions.
“We also hope the deputy prime minister will help the prime minister to focus on the country’s administration, speed up the vaccination process to achieve herd immunity and to see to the needs of the people in each parliamentary constituency by distributing more food aid,” he said in a statement.
Yesterday, the Cabinet agreed to set up an RCI over pilgrims’ fund Lembaga Tabung Haji’s (LTH) audit issues and allegations of mismanagement.
Ismail had said the Prime Minister’s Department would identify a list of members for the RCI, comprising experts in Shariah and civil law, Islamic banking and investment.
On Thomas, the backbenchers said they want his controversial memoir titled “My Story: Justice in the Wilderness” to be probed.
As for Adib’s inquest, they said it would be for justice and the judicial process of the country.
An inquest in 2019 ruled that Adib’s death was a result of a criminal act by more than two people.
Police had proposed another inquest with then inspector-general of police Abdul Hamid Bador saying there were new witnesses who would testify in the case. - FMT
