PETALING JAYA: An employee at the Kuala Lumpur Tower has called for Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB) to set aside its “agenda” in its dispute over the concession to manage the iconic skyscraper.
He said the outgoing operator should stand down and let the new company to take charge of operations.
LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd was supposed to take over the management of the KL Tower on April 1, but a stand-off occurred after MKLSB and its parent company, Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd, initiated a lawsuit against the award of the concession, alleging contractual breaches and misconduct.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the employee said that he, along with some 90% of the current KL Tower staff were absorbed by LSH Service Master after they had their services terminated by MKLSB.
However, they are unable to work because MKLSB is refusing to hand over the operations to the new concessionaire.
“We know there’s an agenda, but we, the staff, are stuck in the middle.
“There was an agreement signed for LSH Service Master to absorb all the staff previously employed by MKLSB. We signed the agreement and we are now employees of LSH Service Master, who have promised to pay us,” he said.
However, he added, because LSH Service Master is prevented from taking over the operations, none of the employees are able to clock in for work.
He said he was disappointed with MKLSB for putting the employees in this predicament.
Previously, the communications ministry said that MKLSB’s management contract had expired on March 31, and that LSH Service Master, which is controlled by Lim Seong Hai Capital Bhd (LSH Capital), was awarded a 20-year concession in May 2024.
MKLSB and Hydroshoppe are seeking RM20.13 million in losses and damages, as well as the transfer of the concession back to them.
They have also refused to vacate the premises and continue to operate the tower.
LSH Service Master subsequently lodged a police report on April 1 after they were barred from entering the premises. Its CEO, Khairil Faizal Othman was reported to have said that they face financial losses for each day the company is unable to take over the operations of the KL Tower, but declined to divulge the amount.
The source went on to reveal that staff were not sent a personal invite to an Aidilfitri open house hosted by MKLSB – which former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to attend – especially those who have been working at the KL Tower for over a decade.
“There was a general invite. But I won’t be attending.” - FMT
