Selangor To Tackle Potholes With Drones Lasers

The Selangor state government, through subsidiary company Selgem Sdn Bhd, has introduced a system that monitors and manages road assets in a more efficient manner, said Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
The Selangor Smart Road Asset Management System was developed in early 2021 to minimise road damage, using the latest technology to detect potholes.
“This system integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, light detection and ranging (Lidar) system, smart droned and 360° camera coverage to detect road damage, such as potholes, with an automatic and digitalised workflow as well as complaint process.
“It has been approved by local authorities for use on all roads in Selangor, to ensure coordinated road maintenance and monitoring,” Amirudin said in a Facebook post.
He added the system was developed to support the current reporting system which gathers complaints made on social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Waze, onto one platform.
Selangor MB Amirudin ShariThe menteri besar also said that the new system is also able to provide feedback on the status of complaints on social media, including photos, to the complainant.
“Selangor Smart Road Asset Management System will identify complaints automatically and classify them according to the districts within the state.
“It will be used comprehensively by all local authorities in Selangor to ensure the uniformity in centralised data,” he said.
Drones and AI
It was announced in 2018 that a feasibility study on using drones and artificial intelligence (AI) to assess trees, potholes and various infrastructure would be conducted.
Selangor senior state executive councillor Teng Chang Khim said the drones would be useful for the local authorities to predict risks, especially when a tree might fall in the event of a heavy thunderstorm.
However, the Selangor government has been collecting data on potholes from Waze since 2016, in an effort to better understand road conditions and make a better case for more road maintenance allocations from the federal government.
Potholes have been a major issue in the state and gained media attention after then science, technology and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin suffered injuries from hitting a pothole in Banting. - Mkini
