Selangor Activates Urgent Flood Relief Efforts

The Selangor government has activated urgent relief efforts in the wake of flooding and continuous heavy rainfall of up to 380mm, opening 46 temporary shelters for 3,542 displaced people as of 5pm today.
Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the total amount of rainfall recorded by the state Irrigation and Drainage Department was more than double the previous record of 180mm.
"Further, water levels in affected areas can reach 4.5m," said Amirudin.
He said 134 sluice gates had to be closed in order to prevent more flooding, while 93 water pumps are in full operation to speed up water flow into the irrigation system.
On the temporary shelters, Amirudin said affected districts include Klang, Petaling, Sepang, Kuala Langat, and Kuala Selangor.
"All the shelters will include basic amenities such as clothes, food, hand sanitiser, face masks and a small cubicle for privacy.
"Given that we are still struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic, all flood victims will be going through periodic free Covid-19 screenings to prevent fresh infections," he said, adding that a dedicated shelter will be opened for victims who tested positive.
Water tankers will be deployed to supply fresh water for flood victims at the shelters.
Amirudin said state government assets and agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, armed forces, as well as police will be deployed for evacuation and aid distribution.
Further, he said the state government will deploy Team Selangor volunteers and SERVE to assist in the relief process, distributing early rations and clean-up that will be activated after water levels have receded.
