(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Federal police have tightened the security at government buildings, high-traffic areas and key facilities in view of recent security threats. In a statement, Bukit Aman management director Azmi Abu Kassim said police will continue to maintain a level of preparedness to ensure public safety.
He said they took the “several incidents of attacks and threats” in public areas and government premises very seriously, acknowledging that these have led to concern among the public.
Azmi added that Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has urged every police officer and personnel to “take comprehensive measures” while on duty in complying with existing circulars, SOPs and orders.
“We urge the community to continue cooperating with us by channelling any information related to national security to the authorities.
“The police will not tolerate any threat to national security and public peace. Stern action based on the law will be taken against any culprit, regardless of status or background. We guarantee that the nation is safe and secure.”
This follows the recent attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor which saw two policemen killed and one injured. The 21-year-old attacker was shot dead.
Police initially believed that the suspect was a member of Jemaah Islamiyah, but Razarudin later clarified that further investigations showed the he had no ties with the extremist group.
This incident also came soon after national footballer Faisal Halim was splashed with acid at a shopping mall in Kota Damansara, leaving the winger requiring multiple surgeries. He is still being treated in hospital.
More recently, DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok received a death threat along with two bullets in her mailbox. Police have recorded the statements of four people, including Kok, and are still investigating the case. -FMT
