Sea Games Wan Athira Becomes Malaysia S First Medal Winner After Strange Decision By Host Cambodia
Wan Athira had clocked 41.724s in the women’s 100m individual obstacle race at the 2023 Sea Games. - NSTP/MOHAMAD SHAHRIL BADRI SAALIPHNOM PENH: Wan Athira Hidayah Ahmad Fuzli was left puzzled to be declared as Malaysia's first medal winner today at the 2023 Sea Games.
Minutes earlier, obstacle racer William Yoong was thought to have won Malaysia's first medal, a bronze in the men's 100m individual. He clocked 28.234s to beat Cambodia's Ol Saoheng for third place at the Chroy Changvar Convention Centre Car park.
Wan Athira had clocked 41.724s in the women's 100m individual obstacle race, and she saw Indonesia's Anggun Yolanda finishing third with 39.598s. However, the organisers decided to award Wan Athira a bronze medal despite the Malaysian losing the bronze medal round to Anggun.
Host Cambodia had also decided to award its men's athlete, Saoheng, the bronze medal though he didn't complete the course today.
Filipina Precious Cabuya won the women's 100m individual obstacle gold (32.732s) and her compatriot Kaizen Dela Cerna took the silver (35.552).
Wan Athira said she has no comments on the host's strange decision.
"They decided on a shared bronze medal. It's mixed feelings for me. I could not believe it after I lost the bronze medal round," said a puzzled Wan Athira.
"I think this is the first bronze medal for Malaysia. I'm grateful for the medal."
In the men's event, Filipino
Mark Rodelas won the gold medal (25.194s) and compatriot Kevin Pascua (26.814) settled for silver.
Meanwhile William, with teammates Redha Rozlan, Nur Hafis Said Alwi, and Ghalib Mohamad Azimi, will be going for gold in tomorrow's men's team relay final against the Philippines.
