PETALING JAYA: Sarawak DAP, which suffered a huge setback in 2021, has hopes of capturing more state assembly seats at the state elections due in the next two years, state chairman Chong Chieng Jen said.
In 2021, DAP only won two of 24 state assembly seats contested, compared to the seven secured in the previous elections.
Chong said today the state party wanted to win more seats to form a stronger check and balance in the state legislative assembly, Borneo Post reported.
While DAP is part of the unity government at the federal level, the state party is part of the opposition in Sarawak, while Gabungan Parti Sarawak forms the state government.
“For the sake of Sarawak and financial security of our future generations, we need a stronger opposition to put a check on the extravagance of the present GPS,” he was quoted as saying at the party’s convention earlier today.
Chong, who is assemblyman for Padungan, said Sarawak had, over the years, benefitted from a stronger opposition in the state.
“When we were at out strongest in the late 2000s and early 2010s, better land policies were introduced, and Sarawak’s landowners enjoyed better land rights,” he said.
Chong also said that there was greater transparency and accountability in the state government’s administration and policies then.
The next Sarawak state assembly elections are due by April 2027 at the latest. - FMT
