Sabah Ngo Sets Up Blockade To Prevent More Demolition Of Squatter Houses
The NGO Borneo Komrad has set up a blockade to prevent local authorities from entering Kampung Teluk Layang in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Group founder Mukmin Nantang said on Instagram they had received information that the demolition of houses in Kampung Teluk Layang would commence today or tomorrow.
“Borneo Komrad and Universiti Malaysia Sabah Suara Mahasiswa (student group), together with the community will defend this village.
“We hope everyone will pray for us in a call for solidarity,” Mukmin wrote.
This followed a similar incident in Kampung Mangga yesterday, where the group claimed 15 houses were destroyed.
A Borneo Komrad representative told Malaysiakini that the demolition in Kampung Mangga is still taking place today.
She said the group is still deciding whether to form a blockade or use wooden planks to stop the authorities from destroying the village.
She added that while the demolitions in these villages also involved the stateless, they differ from the Bajau Laut demolition in the waters of the Tun Sakaran Marine Park in Semporna.
‘Don’t politicise the matter’
Meanwhile, Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor said today that the demolition was carried out because of security and should not be politicised.
Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor“The Sabah government will help the nomadic community of Bajau Laut in Semporna, whose homes were demolished,” he told news portal The Vibes.
The Sabah government has yet to issue any similar clarifications with regard to the situation in Kampung Teluk Layang and Kampung Mangga. - Mkini
