Ros Imposes Ban On Agms Due To Covid 19 Umno Postpones Branch Meetings

CORONAVIRUS | The Registrar of Societies (ROS) today imposed a temporary ban on all annual general assemblies and related gatherings by organisations registered under it in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19
The ROS, in a statement, conceded that the meetings must be held in accordance with the organisation's constitution
"However, considering the Covid-19 situation becoming more serious, ROS would like to inform that all organisations are prohibited from holding programmes/activities/conferences/gatherings/annual general assemblies until June 30 in line with the government's directive
"This directive applies to organisations at all levels including branches across the country," it said
The ROS said it is empowered to implement the measures under Section 3A of the Societies Act 1966
It added that if the Covid-19 situation does not subside by June 30, the organisations must make an application to the ROS to further delay their AGMs
The organisations are legally required to hold a general assembly annually so as to prevent deregistration but an extension of time can be granted by the ROS
"It is hoped that all measures undertaken by the government will help curb the spread of Covid-19 and protect Malaysian from the outbreak," it said
Meanwhile, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan (photo) announced that all of its branch meetings will be postponed

"The meetings for the 21,039 Umno branches which began on Feb 15 will be postponed to a date to be announced
"This is a precautionary measure due to the spread of Covid-19
"All Umno programmes involving crowds are discouraged for now and the advice is to postpone," he said
Yesterday, Malaysia's total Covid-19 cases almost doubled, increasing by 190 cases in a day, bringing the total to 428 cases
Preliminary investigations showed most of the cases are linked to a religious gathering at Sri Petaling mosque
Some 16,000 people attended the gathering from Feb 27 to March 1, 14,500 of whom are Malaysians from across the country
Globally, 167,392 people have been infected to date with 6,503 deaths
China, where the virus started, was the worst-hit country, with 80,860 cases and 3,212 deaths. However, The country is now only seeing low double-digit cases after two months of unprecedented measures including lockdowns
However, the virus has spread to other parts of the world and Italy is now the worst-hit country in Europe
Italy has reported 24,747 cases to date with 1,809 deaths, with new 368 deaths reported in the last 24 hours
