Rm600m Carcosa Facelift Raises Eyebrows Mp Asks How It Serves Rakyat
PARLIAMENT | An opposition MP has raised concerns over Putrajaya's proposal to spend RM600 million for Carcosa Seri Negara's facelift.
Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) pointed out that, for one, such a big amount could have been channelled for better use to benefit the rakyat instead of repairing a heritage building that would only benefit a few.
"We are not against development. But why is this RM600 million (project) being announced at a time when the rakyat is struggling with financial issues and costs of living?" he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Carcosa Seri Negara consists of two heritage buildings that had once served as an expensive colonial mansion during British rule.
ADSLocated at the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, the buildings have been repurposed and now serve as a luxury boutique hotel.
Under the 2026 Supply Bill tabled by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday, the government said Khazanah Nasional Berhad would fork out RM600 million to fund uplifting works of Carcosa Seri Negara and six building blocks at the Sultan Abdul Samad Complex.
Funds diverted to parties?
In his speech, Fadhli cited an article written by Rafizi Ramli (Harapan-Pandan) in 2016, questioning then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's proposal to use RM650 million to upgrade the Lake Gardens into Taman Tugu (national monument park), a project Khazanah had also spearheaded.

Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli ShaariRafizi had raised concerns about the huge allocation and questioned whether the project would be used to channel money to BN for its election funds.
"So, today I want to ask, what is the guarantee that this RM600 million (for Carcosa Seri Negara) would not be channelled to fund (government parties) in the next general election?" Fadhli said.
The PAS lawmaker demanded the government conduct the project in a transparent manner, including having its actual costs presented to the Public Accounts Committee, and a transparent open tender process for each and every package under the project.
Fadhli also urged the government to make all project bidders declare their actual ownership, company holding structure, and the flow of money they received from the project. - Mkini
