Rent Unpaid For Years Seremban City Council Removes Doors From Flats

The Seremban City Council (MBS) has removed the doors of several units at the Lobak low-cost flats after its residents failed to pay rent for years.
Some tenants had not paid the monthly RM150 rent for decades, racking up arrears in the tens of thousands of ringgit.
The enforcement action was conducted against those who owed more than RM15,000 in back rent.
During the operation in Lobak, MBS found that some flat-dwellers were not the actual tenants on record with the council, implying that these units were sublet to other tenants.
“We have sent notices and warnings on the rent owed but to this day you have failed, neglected and refused to pay the arrears.
“So, we are here from MBS to take further action by removing your doors.
“However, we found that you are not the actual tenant of this flat. How did you enter this home? You are considered a trespasser,” one officer was recorded informing a tenant in MBS’ video of the incident on Feb 27.
The video was uploaded onto the council’s Facebook yesterday.
The particular flat which was sublet was found to have rent arrears of RM34,000, the officer said. This is more than 18 years of unpaid rent.
“This home belongs to the council and was rented out, it’s not a charity home,” another council officer told a tenant.
Tenants can stay temporarily, albeit without doors
In a statement earlier, MBS said the Lobak operation targeted dwellers of six units who owed between RM17,000 and RM34,000 in back rent.
ADSThey were issued tenancy termination notices on Jan 31 and were told to move out by Feb 26.
“After this period ended, MBS removed their doors to encourage them to pay up.
“However, the tenants are still allowed to stay in the flats temporarily, while looking for other places to live,” the council said.
This is not the first time the city council has taken such drastic action.Last December, the same action was taken against tenants at Pangsapuri Rakyat Seri Perdana Paroi.
The council said it will continue to take regular enforcement action against errant tenants at the Paroi and Lobak low-cost flats. - Mkini
